    PUBLIC TALK: "HOW TO DEVELOP COMPASSION"

    Compassion is the element to all happiness and ultimate bliss. The topic will cover on how we can train our mind and heart to develop compassion, how to love not only ourselves but also our friends, loved ones, family members as well as our enemies. Through the practice of compassion, we can eliminate our anger, jealousy as well as our hatred that we always find ourselves in constant conflicts with the people around us, and ultimately achieve bliss of happiness.

    The 12 LINKS OF DEPENDENT ORIGINATION

    The teaching of Shakyamuni Buddha on the six samsaric realms and their suffering that are mainly caused by delusion and karma has been realized by a great number of ancient Indian and Tibetan masters. Like the Buddha, they too, renounced the world and went forth to search for Truth. One Way to understand the suffering nature of samsara is to meditate on the gradual evolution of the twelve links of dependent origination (Skt: pratitya samutpada; Tib: ten-drel. Chu-nyi) as shown by the Buddha. This is also depicted in the symbolic drawing of the Wheel of Life (Skt: samsaracakra; Tib:sib-pe-k'or-lo) which is also known as the Circle of the twelve dependent origination. It is held in the mouth of the Lord of Death showing how all beings that live in the six realms of samsara are controlled by impermanence and death. His hands and feet also support the Wheel, symbolizing how true suffering and the true cause of suffering - delusion and karma, trap these beings. Sentient beings are suffering in the circle of interdependent origination. Its root is ignorance, which is the complete opposite of the Dharma wisdom that perceives the absolute reality.

    GREEN TARA INITIATION

    Green Tara, the Mother deity of giving and wish fulfilling answers to all our prayers. This initiation is given to one so that we can practice and develop our faith towards Mother Tara and also transform our adversity into bliss and happiness.

    FOUR-ARMED CHERENZIG

    Also known as Guan Yin, this initiation is given to us so that we can practice the loving compassion of the deity. One who practices the Deity of Cherenzig with faith and commitment will eventually develop kind loving compassion towards all beings as well as destroy all bad elements within us such as anger and hatreds.

    HERUKA VAJRASATTVA INITIATION

    Heruka Vajrasattva, the deity who is known to all, helps to destroy all our ignorance and purify our negative karma. This initiation is empowered to us so that we can practice and develop wisdom within us by destroying the ignorance in us. Likewise, we can also purify and minimize our negative karma that we have accumulated since beginningless time.

    PUBLIC TALK: PATIENCE, ETHICS AND PURE MORAL CONDUCT

    In today's fast-paced society, we are constantly caught up in the race of competing with one another. In the process of gaining fame, status, wealth or even love, we may unknowingly lose some important qualities such as patience, ethics and moral conduct. This topic will bring us to understand the importance of developing patience, ethics and pure moral conduct in order to achieve a happy and healthy life, which in turn increase our wisdom and wealth.

    The Human Route

    Coming empty-handed, going empty-handed -- that is human.
    When you are born, where do you come from?
    When you die, where do you go?
    Life is like a floating cloud which appears.
    Death is like a floating cloud which disappears.
    The floating cloud itself originally does not exist.
    Life and death, coming and going, are also like that.
    But there is one thing which always remains clear.
    It is pure and clear, not depending on life and death.

    Then what is the one pure and clear thing?

    Lilies on the river

    We are organising a community event on 15 May 2003 at the Singapore River. It is both a fund raising event as well as to promote racial harmony. The event will include:
    1)A carnival featuring vegetarian food, tropical fruits, games, etc;
    2)Exhibits of the 9 religious faiths in Singapore - these exhibits are from the Inter Religious Organisation 3 Booths set up by Mendaki and Sinda exhibiting and demonstrating the Malay and Indian culture;
    4)Distribution of goodie bags to 2,000 beneficiaries living in one room rented HDB flats within the boundary of Central Singapore CDC. This CDC has the largest number of recipients under the Public Assistance Scheme;
    5)Performances by schools, Mendaki, Sinda and artistes;
    6)Floating of 100,000 lilies down the Singapore River; and
    7)Candle lights procession.

    The floating of the lilies is a fund raising event and funds raised will be used as follows:

  • Sharing & caring for you project - distribution of the goodie bags to beneficiaries, as mentioned above;
  • The Viriya Elderly Welfare Fund - this will be used to fund senior citizens in need of financial and medical assistance. We also hope to set up a centre to allow these elderly to remain connected with society as well as lead a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
  • The Viriya Children's Medical Fund - the funds will be used to assist needy children suffering from life threatening illness and to research on these illnesses.
  • Mendaki Education Trust Fund (ETF)- funds to help needy families. Children from poor families will benefit from ETF as the Fund will be used to subsidise the preschool education of children from low-income families. It will also be used to provide subsidies for intensive tuition programmes to students from poor families who are weak in their studies and who need attention beyond that can be offered in remedial classes or normal tuition programmes.
  • Sinda Bursary Fund
  • Inter racial Appreciation Fund of Central Spore CDC

    We appeal to volunteers to help us to to raise fund by selling the lilies through donation cards. Interested volunteers can kindly contact Beng Wee at 67951008 or bengwee@viriya.org.sg

    Apr 26Phor Kark See Monastery, Buddhist Library , The
    Prayer for World Peace

    In face of SARS, let us pay tribute to the courage of those infected and their families, those providing public healthcare and transport, and all whose lives have been touched.

    May everyone practise and experience universal Compassion.

    Taking care physically, may we heed the proper medical advice.
    Taking care spiritually, may we reflect upon the Buddha's advice:

    Protecting ourselves, we protect others;
    Protecting others, we protect ourselves.
    We live in a web of interdependence.
    We are one family.

    “ Even as a mother protects with her life her only child, So with a boundless heart should one cherish all beings. ”

    “ If you do not take care of each other,
    who will take care of you?
    One who tends the sick, tends me. ”

    In view of the negative developments around the world, Phor Kark See Monastery has initiated an effort to rally Buddhist organizations in Singapore for a Day of Prayer for World Peace on April 26. The library will be holding a session of Pali chanting and metta meditation led by Venerable B Dhammaratana on stipulated day at 6.00pm at the library. All are invited to spend the one hour in radiating metta and good thoughts to all beings.

    NOTE: In view of the current worldwide instability and the SARS outbreak, we believe that Buddhists in Singapore can play our part in promoting the well-being of the world through a day of prayer. Together, with fellow Buddhists around the world, let us radiate loving-kindness through prayer and meditation to quell the atmosphere of fear and hate. If each of us were to put in the effort, we would be able to cross the crucial threshold of accumulating enough loving-kindness, to send its ripples in all directions, to bring about real and substantial positive changes worldwide.

    Health is the highest gain.
    Contentment is the greatest wealth.
    Trustworthy ones are the best relatives.
    Nirvana is the highest bliss.

    -The Buddha (Dhammapada)

    Hatred never ceases by hatred;
    by love alone is it healed.
    The is the ancient and eternal law.
