    1) The Teacher

"Namkhai Norbu was born in 1938 in Dirghi in Eastern Tibet. He was recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of a great Dzogchen master of the early twentieth century, Adzom Drugpa.

He had trained with some of the most important masters of his time and was rigorously educated in both Sutra and Tantra in the traditional Tibetan monastic system. He had also completed a variety of academic studies. At the age of sixteen, he met the master Changchub Dorje who introduced him to the authentic knowledge and experience of Dzogchen.

Since 1960, Namkhai Norbu has lived in Italy when he started collaboration with professor Giuseppe Tucci, an eminent scholar and founder of the Institute of Eastern Studies in Rome.

In the years 1964 - 92, he took the post of professor at the University of Naples, giving lectures on Tibetan and Mongolian history, culture, literature and languages. He began to give instructions on Dzogchen in 1976, establishing The Dzogchen Community. In addition, he also teaches various espects of Tibetan culture such as Yantra Yoga, Tibetan Medicine and Astrology. He has written many books on Dzogchen and Tibetan culture. "Crystal and the Way of Light", "Mirror", "Dream Yoga and the Practice of the Natural Light" and "Dzogchen, The Self-Perfected State" are some of the books.

He is also involved in implementing projects for the preservation of the Tibetan culture.

Namkhai Norbu is married and has two adult children."

    2) Synopsis of the Teaching

"Namhkai Norbu will be giving the transmission of the state of Dzogchen, which is the natural condition of every individual, with explanations of Dzogchen in the context of Buddhist teachings as a whole. The transmission is part of a series of teachings called "The Longsal Cycle" or The Cycle of the Innermost Essence of the Luminous Clarity of the Universe, which belongs to the "oral instruction" category of Dzogchen. The main method of practice to be introduced will be the purification of each individual for the purpose of discovering and sustaining the awareness of their natural condition. Other methods for the harmonization of the body, the speech and the mind will also be introduced."

The Maitreya Project International Pte. Ltd., Singapore, is presenting an extremely rare and precious collection of sacred Buddhist relics in Singapore. I feel it especially relevant at this time as an opportunity for people of all spiritual and humanitarian persuasions to come together to pray for and visualise loving kindness for world peace.

The relics have toured the United States, Canada, Taiwan and New Zealand. After Singapore they are scheduled to go to Hongkong SAR.

    Linking Hearts to Hearts
Organized by the KMSPKS Youth Ministry
designed by artist Seck Yok Ying

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery celebrates Vesak 2547 (2003) with Gratitude Palms ¨C Linking Hearts to Hearts, a public art project aimed at lifting our hearts by appreciating all the blessings in our lives.

In face of the SARS outbreak and the troubled economy in Singapore, Gratitude Palms hopes to send out the message of staying positive and being grateful for all the big and small blessings that befall our lives, our family and our country. Embracing such an appreciative outlook will create more good will and kindness. This will lift our spirits and ultimately reduce some of our pains.

All visitors to KMSPKS during the Vesak Eve and Vesak Day can leave their palm prints on the Gratitude Wall to show appreciation to those who have touched their hearts. They will be encouraged to send postcards carrying gratitude quotes to their benefactors.

In order for this meaningful project to work, we your help to volunteer! You have a choice of the following tasks:

    Volunteer and Help Needed

We will be organising a Vesak day booth for Sravasti Abbey at Phor Kark See. The celebrations at PKS will be from 6 pm on Vesak eve (14 May 03) to 5 pm on Vesak day (15 May 03). Please see below for the objectives and some activities of the booth.

We require volunteers for the following time slots:

  • 14 May 03: 6 p.m. to 12 midnight
  • 15 May 03: 7 a.m. to 12 noon, or 12 noon to 5 p.m.

It's fine too if you could come for a shorter time within each time slot.

You're welcome to come and help out any time you could. Better still if you could confirm it by contacting Choon Fah ( HP: 9798-6389), so that I could better plan the duty roster. You can find out more about Sravasti Abbey at http://www.sravastiabbey.org
If you have interesting things that we could sell at the stall to raise funds, please also let me know.

For a long time, it has been Venerable Chodron's heartfelt (and I feel, very far-sighted) wish to establish an abbey in the West to provide proper training for Western monastics so that they could be of real benefit to society. This is a rare chance we have to help fulfill her wish and repay the kindness she has shown us over the years.

Hope to see you. If you can't come to help, then bring your family here and give us support! The Phor Kark See is organising a grand Event and importantly we have a interesting Booths

    2) Exhibits of the 9 religious faiths in Singapore - these exhibits are from the Inter Religious Organisation

    3) Booths set up by Mendaki and Sinda exhibiting and demonstrating the Malay and Indian culture;

Programme of His Holiness the 101th Ganden Tripa Supreme Head of the Gelugpa Tradition

    About the Ganden Tripa:

The Ganden Tripas rank together with the Sakya Trizin and the Karmapa as the official heads of their respective traditions. Though the Dalai Lamas are commonly thought to be the head of the Gelugpa, they are actually not the head of the Gelugpa but the Head of Tibetan Buddhism as they represent all the four Schools! Many Ganden Tripas serve as Teachers to the Dalai Lamas and Regents during the interim of a Dalai Lama.

The present Ganden Tripa was officially enthroned in Bodhigaya in December 2002 by the present Dalai Lama during 2002's Great Prayer Festival.

    The programmes (30 May 2003 - 22 June 2003):

The Lam-Rim offers the most comprehensive overview of all the teachings of the Buddha. It is an essential guide to the teachings and foundation to both the sutras and the tantras.

The Guhyasamaja, literally, the "Assembly of Secrets" is the Supreme King of Tantras. It is an indispensable key to mastery of the tantric teachings. In particular, this unique presentation of Guhyasamaja by Je Tzongkhapa encompasses both the Sakya and the Kagyu lineages. Students are required to fulfill commitments after the Initiation.

"The Wheel of Sharp Weapons" is a rare transmission and commentary to the Mind-Training instructions. Ganden Mahamudra uniquely offers the "pointing-out" instructions to the Ultimate Nature.

Namgyalma is the Buddha that bestows victory, success, long-life, health and happiness.

White Jambhala with 4 dakinis is a powerful practice for outer material and inner wealth.

    White Jambhala Puja Sponsorship:

The puja will be personally conducted by His Holiness. All sponsorship amounts will be for His Holiness's programmes and projects.

The most direct way to learn Buddhism is to read and live the Pali suttas, some of the oldest records we have of the Buddha's teachings. As we search these suttas, we will discover ourselves amidst its stories, teachings and practices. In short, we will get a taste of the timeless truth that has liberated countless beings from suffering.

This new series will also help you how learn to use the Pali Canon: to locate suttas, teachings and stories, and have an idea of how Suttas are transmitted and translated. Although a very basic knowledge of Buddhism (Five Precepts, etc) is helpful, no knowledge of Pali is required for this course. It is suitable for beginners and mid-range enthusiasts. Sutta notes will be given but there is no charge nor registration for the series

    Blood Donation Drive

Help! The blood bank needs more blood. The recent outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has kept people from hospitals as far as possible, so did they avoid the Bloodbank@RedCross.

The number of donors dropped a whopping two-thirds in April alone. The blood bank actually needs 200 honors a day to meet the needs of Singapore hospitals but now it sees only about 60 to 80 donors a day.

Even as more blood donation is the need of the hour, donations are expected to drop further this month thanks to the school holidays. Now with hospitals resuming their normal activities, the requirements will also increase again and even rise beyond previous levels. You can play a role by donating blood (Eligibility for blood donations).

You can donate blood anytime at the blood bank:

    Daily
    Bloodbank@RedCross , 11 Outram Road
    9am to 6pm (weekdays)
    9am to 2pm (weekends)
    Donors can also call 6219-0626

There will also be blood donation drives at the following Buddhist organisations:
