We spend our lives being seduced by the outside world, believing completely that happiness and suffering come from "out there." But "Everything we experience is our own karmic appearance. Everything is made up by our own minds," says Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

By understanding emptiness - that nothing exists from its own side and everything occurs in dependence upon causes and conditions - we can slowly loosen the grip of ego-grasping and begin to develop our marvellous potential for clarity, contentment, love and the other qualities that are innate in us.

Mind, or consciousness, is at the very heart of Buddhist practice. And knowing and transforming it - the whole spectrum of our thoughts, feelings, and emotions - is work we all need to do.

We all want to be fulfilled, content, joyful. But why is it that no matter how hard we try, we are so often thwarted in our efforts? According to Buddhism it is because we don't give enough power to our own mind and our own experiences; we don't deeply understand the inner causes of our experiences.

Although it appears true that the world is the source of our happiness and pain, this is an illusion. We are, in fact, the creators of our own reality, and we need to taste our capacity to experience this.

  • Jul 14Full Moon in the Chinese Sixth Lunar MonthAsalha Puja or Dhamma Day.

This commemorates the Buddha's first discourse, the Dhamma-Cakka-Pavattana Sutta (the Discourse on the Turning of the Wheel of Truth) in Sarnath (Isipatana, Benares) - the Deer Park , which he gave to the group of five monks with whom he had practised in the forest for many years. Upon hearing this discourse, one of the monks -- Ven. Kondañña -- gained his first glimpse of Nibbana, thus giving birth to the Noble Sangha. The annual rains retreat (vassa) commences the following day.

Note: At the end of this first sermon, the Venerable Kondañña became a Sotapanna (a person at the first stage of enlightenment) and then, according to the Commentaries, for example, the Commentary on Vinaya, the other four disciples became Sotapannas, one on each of the four following days. On the first day after the full-moon day in July, the monk Vappa became a Sotapanna; on the second day, Bhaddiya; on the third day, Mahanama; and on the fourth day, Assaji. After they became Sotapannas, they all asked Buddha for ordination. Buddha ordained each of them by calling to them, "Come monks." On the fifth day after the full-moon day, the Buddha assembled them and preached to them this discourse Anatta-lakkhana Sutta. -The Discourse on the Not-self Characteristic (no-soul or anatta)

    Buddhist Library , The
Zen talk and retreat by Dennis Duermeier

Backed by popular demand, the Buddhist Library is inviting Professor Y. Karunadasa, Professor Emeritus of Pali and Buddhist Studies at Kelaniya University, to come back for an extended stay with us - and he has kindly agreed. Starting mid-August, Professor Karunadasa will do two courses at the Library:

    a) BUDDHIST ETHICS

The course will be primarily based on the Pali Suttas in order to gain an insight into early Buddhist teachings relating to ethics, that is, the theory and practice of Buddhist moral life. The course will begin with a clarification of the Buddhist view of reality, which is based on the Middle Doctrine (majjhima desana) and its relationship to Buddhist ethics, which is based on the Middle Path (majjhima patipada). This will be followed up with a discussion of the following topics: Buddhist critique of pre-Buddhist moral theories; the psychological foundation of Buddhist ethics; criteria of moral evaluation; the distinction between one's own good and the good of others; degrees of moral wholesomeness; practice of the Buddhist moral life; Noble Eightfold Path as the foundation of Buddhist morality; ethics of family life and inter-personal relations; moral life and economics; moral life and politics; the final goal of Buddhist moral life; Nibbana as the highest level of moral perfection.

Date: Every Friday starting 15 Aug 2003
    Duration: 10 Fridays
    Venue: The Buddhist Library
    Time: 7.30pm
    Fees: $100 (public), $80 (member)

    b) A GUIDE TO PALI SUTTAS

The course will begin with an introduction to the Pali Sutta Pitaka with its division into five Nikayas, and the problems pertaining to the authenticity of the Khuddaka Nikaya. The course will serve as a general guide to the contents of the suttas, particularly of the Digha Nikaya and the Majjhima Nikaya. The course takes the position that the Pali suttas provide not only the text but also the context for a proper interpretation of Buddhist teachings. Accordingly an integral part of the course will be a critical discussion of the criteria and guidelines laid down in the suttas themselves for interpreting the teachings embodied in them. In this regard special attention will be focused on the Buddha's well-known statement as to the specific framework within which his teachings assume significance, the distinction drawn between discouses whose meaning is drawn out (nitattha) and those whose meaning has to be drawn out (neyyattha), and the Buddha's statement as to the restatability of his teachings in different ways (pariyaya-desana).

Date: Every Sunday starting 17 Aug 2003
    Duration: 10 Sundays
    Venue: The Buddhist Library
    Time: 2pm
    Fees: $100 (public), $80 (member)

Both courses are limited to 60 participants each.

Please call the Buddhist Library at 67468435 if you have any queries. The Buddhist Library is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 12pm to 9pm and on Sundays from 10am to 9pm. We are closed on Mondays.
