Every Tuesday @ 7.45-9.30 p.m.
Venue: The Buddhist Fellowship Centre

Tel: 6842 6422.

The most direct way to learn Buddhism is to read and live the Pali suttas, some of the oldest records we have of the Buddha's teachings. As we search these suttas, we will discover ourselves amidst its stories, teachings and practices. In short, we will get a taste of the timeless truth that has liberated countless beings from suffering.
This new series will also help you how learn to use the Pali Canon: to locate suttas, teachings and stories, and have an idea of how Suttas are transmitted and translated. Although a very basic knowledge of Buddhism (Five Precepts, etc) is helpful, no knowledge of Pali is required for this course. It is suitable for beginners and mid-range enthusiasts. Sutta notes will be given but there is no charge nor registration for the series

| Sep 13 | Viriya Community Service | Viriya Aims to Raise $1m in Funds through Floating of
Over 100,000 Lilies Down the Singapore River

Come 13 September, 40 illuminated giant lilies and 100,000 lilies will brighten up the the Singapore River (Boat Quay) as part of a keen effort to raise S$1 million in funds for community projects supported by Viriya Community Services. This auspicious event will be officiated by Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Acting Minister for Health and Senior Minister of State for Finance.
The funds raised at the “Lilies on the River” event will be used solely for the aid of those in need and to help them persevere through the challenging times in terms of education, health or monetary aid support.
Commencing at 10am, the full day carnival, will feature a variety of vegetarian food, fruits, handicraft, games and performances by students from our family service centre, student care centre, Corporation Primary School, Raffles Institution, Raffles Junior College and Lee Wei Song School of Music. There will also be a children’s art competition and lantern making competition to complement the event and the mid-autumn festive mood.
“We are confident to hit our target of S$1m as we have already achieved more than 80% of the amount largely through funds raised during our roadshows at shopping malls since March this year. We are indeed grateful to the management of these shopping malls and the individual shoppers, in particular the heartlanders who heeded to our appeal wholeheartedly. Given the uniqueness and symbolism of these flowers, we hope the floating of the lilies down our historic lifeline will bring good favour not just to the community, but also to Singapore,” said the Venerable Sek Meow Ee, President of Viriya Community Services.
There will a variety of coloured lilies, each symbolising a key characteristic - perseverance, enduring strength, unique beauty and wisdom – characteristics with which Viriya takes delight in associating.
Each lily is priced S$10 and donors can write a wish for the well being of himself/herself, his/her family, friends or loved ones on the lily itself before it is drifted down the Singapore River. Donors have the option of drifting the lily themselves on the day itself.
Members of the public can sponsor the lilies at Tampines Mall (28 August to 31 August), Lot 1 Shoppers’ Mall (29 August to 31 August), (Causeway Point (29 August to 31 August), Raffles City (1 September to 3 September), Bukit Panjang Plaza (5 September to 7 September), Jurong Point (4 September to 7 September) and Tiong Bahru Plaza (11 September & 12 September) or at Viriya’s office located at 72 Shrewsbury Road, Singapore 307837 (telephone: 6 256 1311 or 6 253 3532).

Dr. Chiu-Nan Lai returning to Singapore!
Good news! Our founder, Dr. Chiu-Nan Lai(Ph.D) will once again be visiting Singapore in October 4th and 5th, 2003!!!
In 1993, 1994, and 1997, Dr Lai conducted a total of 12 public talks. In particular, over 10,000 people attended her public talk in 1994. These people have since rediscovered the joy within themselves, and rewritten new chapters in their lives.
It has been 5 years since Dr. Lai last visited Singapore. In recent years, Singaporean friends have had to visit distant places like the U.S.A., China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand to personally hear her speeches. This time round, Dr. Lai will revisit Singapore to conduct a half-day workshop, to share with us her newest discoveries and insights relating to holistic health. Don't miss this unique opportunity!
- Suppose you are feeling unsettled because of the global instability, weak economy, poor health, and tense spousal and interpersonal relationship;
- Suppose you feel resigned living in a polluted environment;
- Suppose you feel anxious and fearful from pent-up emotions;
- Suppose you feel helpless and lost without a direction in life …
We sincerely invite you to attend Dr. Lai's talks, and rediscover bliss in your life!
More details on the workshops in the next issue of the newsletter. However, if you can't wait and need more details immediately, please call us at (65) 63375183.
