    Vipassana Meditation Retreat

    By Visuddhacara

A vipassana retreat is an opportunity for one to come back to oneself - to observe one's mind and body and in the process to attain calm and insight. Vipassana is the Pali word for insight. It involves the application of mindfulness for the development of wisdom. In the Discourse on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, the Buddha has described the practice of mindfulness as "the direct way leading to the purification of mind, surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, ending of pain and grief, attainment of the right path, and realization of Nibbana."

The cultivation of mindfulness is also very useful for our daily life. It helps us to maintain a certain level of ease and calm, besides enabling us to be more aware of our schemas - how we are responding to events. It enables us to check our negative characteristic traits and improve on our positive qualities.

Before the first century, relics were key instruments in the spread of Buddhism in helping to establish new centres of religious significance.

Since the initial list of sacred sites marked by Buddha was limited, the outward dissemination of his relics made it possible for new centres to be established.

According to Buddhist scriptures, Buddha said for one to witness His relics was as good as seeing Buddha himself.

Thus, we are very fortunate to be able to showcase, amongst Buddha's many relics,Buddha's tooth relics at the exhibition. This implies this venue at Suntec city is now a holy centre of religious significance.

    Mahabodhi Stupa

The world famous Mahabodhi Stupa at Bodgaya has been close to the hearts of Buddhists of all traditions for the last 2500 years. It marks the site where our precious teacher Sakyamuni attained enlightenment under the bodhi tree and became a fully enlightened being finally breaking the chains of suffering in cyclic existence. He showed the way to all mankind that we too have the potential to become a Buddha and have lasting happiness.

This living heritage of enlightenment is enshrined in the icon of the Mahabodhi Stupa , which was declared a "world heritage site" by UNESCO in Jan 03.

ABC will create a replica model of this powerful holy stupa measuring 15ft x 15ft with a tower standing 38ft , on the open grounds at the Aljunied MRT . We invite you all to spread the word around and ask your relatives and friends to visit us during Vesak to benefit by creating skies of merit on this most auspicious day.
