Dhammapada VI: Affection, Anger & Impurities

The Best and the Most Beautiful moments are the ones that we always want to be everlasting and more. The unsightly, ugly and sorrowful moments are the ones that we cannot bear even for a second longer. Such is the nature of our minds.

Separation from the beloved and associate with the unbeloved are both painful. Not seeing the beloved and the sight of the unbeloved are also painful. At times, these lead to aversion, too.

Walking on the path of the Dhamma, we constantly face the challenges of our affections for our beloved ones and material possessions, the incessantly burning anger, and the taints in us. Let’s walk through the Teachings of the Buddha from Dhammapada- The chapter of Affection, Anger and Impurities, on these challenges. How our Supreme Teacher advices and guides us with our daily encounters.

We invite you to join us for this great gift of Dhamma!

Course : Dhammapada VI (Chapters on Affection, Anger & Impurities)
    Date : 25th Sep - 27th Nov (every Sun) 10 sessions
    Time : 2:00 pm - 4.15pm
    Venue : Ruwan Buddhist Society

    Mid Autumn Festival Big Sing!

Note: Da Jia Chang is postponed to 1st October 2005. Originally planned for the eve of Chinese mid-Autumn festival (17th September 2005), Da Jia Chang hoped to provide people an evening of getting together and celebration. However, many interested participants told us they were torn among events committed on that day. They included family or social reunion gatherings and volunteering work for meaningful events. Many of these events are indeed heartily supported by Shan You. Since Da Jia Chang is a fund raising programme having the possibility to be held on another day, we decided to postpone it to 1st October 2005 so that supporters and the public can truly enjoy themselves.

Join us in a night of sing-a-long with our talented local mandarin artists and familiar faces during this mid-autumn festival! Let melodies from the 70s to the 90s bring you back to the good old times and sing your hearts out with your family and friends! Bring along your lanterns (battery operated) and light up the place with us!

All profits generated from this event will benefit the meaningful programmes of Shan You Counselling Centre.

Venerable Brahmavamso or Brahm (as he is commonly known) was a Physicist from Cambridge University who became a monk 28 years ago. He experienced meditation bliss even while he was studying at Cambridge University. His interest in Buddhism grew as he gained more knowledge through reading and visiting some temples in London.

A few years into monkhood, studying and practicing under the renowned meditation master in the forest of Thailand, the late Ajahn Chah, he realized that the life as a monk was far more fulfilling then what career and money could offer.

He is a walking example of someone who finds so much happiness in contentment and in a life of true simplicity. If you were to ask him "What is your favorite past time?", his answer would consistently be "Meditation".

Brahm now has more than 20 monks under his careful training at a Buddhist Monastery in Western Australia, just one hour drive from Perth. He also set up the first Buddhist Nunnery of the Theravadan tradition in the Southern Hemisphere in Western Australia.

His wit and humour keeps his disciples and audience captivated when relating his stories and teachings.

The Whole World is a Single Flower - Zen in Modern Life

"The Whole World Is A Single Flower" (WWSF) is a triennial international Zen conference with the objectives of sharing Buddhist teaching, promoting world peace, and providing an occasion for Zen practitioners all over the world to exchange experience.

The theme of this year's event is "Zen in Modern Life". Many teachers, particularly the lay teachers, will be sharing their experience on how Zen connects to their daily lives. In fact, the teaching of our founding teacher, the great Korean Zen Master Seung Sahn , emphasizes the connection between Zen meditation practice and daily life. Through Zen practice, we can clearly perceive our correct situation, relationship and function moment by moment, live in wisdom and compassion, and help our families, our friends, our country and this whole world to gain peace and happiness.
