He also founded the Friends of Buddhism Malaysia and the Friends of Buddhism Singapore. During the latter half of this period he founded the Dharmafarers, a community of full-time lay Buddhist workers. In his layman years before ordination, while Principal of the Seck Kia Eenh Dharma School (Malacca Buddhist Association, Malaysia), he prepared and implemented the Integrated Syllabus of Buddhist Studies, the most comprehensive Buddhist syllabus in Malaysia and Singapore then.

He was regular consultant and lecturer to the Buddhist Studies Team (Buddhist Studies for Secondary Schools in Singapore, Ministry of Education) in the 1980s. After that he was Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, USA. He has written numerous educational books on Buddhism (such as "Total Buddhist Work") and spoken at various international and inter-religious forums. He is well-known for his futuristic visions of Buddhism, especially in terms of the full-time lay Buddhist ministry. He is best known for his national Dharma courses in Malaysia and Singapore and has been advisor or consultant to various tertiary Buddhist societies.

Since 2000, Piya has been living with his family in Singapore, where he is an interdenominational full-time Buddhist worker. He is consultant and Dharma teacher to various organizations, institutions and projects. He regards himself as an ongoing student of Buddhism.

Piyasilo's Higher Ordination (upasampada) under H.H. Somdet Phra Vanarat, the 17th Supreme Patriarch of the Thai Buddhist Order (24 June 1972, Wat Srakes Rajavaramahavihara, Bangkok, Thailand). Dharma talk by Venerable Ajahn Boonmee Dhammarato
    "Can lay people attain enlightenment?"

    Date: 08 June
    Time : 11.00am
    Venue: BF West
Topic : "Can lay people attain enlightenment?"
    Speaker's Profile :
Venerable Ajahn Boonmee Dhammarato is the Abbot of Wat Tham Tao ( Turtle Cave Temple ), a Theravadin Buddhist Forest monastery in North Eastern Thailand. This monastery was established by Venerable Ajahn Maha Boowa YanasamPanno ( 1913-2011), who was an eminent disciple of Ajahn Mun. Late Ajahn Maha Boowa authored Ajahn Mun’s biography. The monastery is a branch close to Ajahn Maha Boowa’s own Baan Taad Forest Monastery.

Ordained at the age of 20, Luang Phor Boonmee has been a monk for 46 vassa, in the forest tradition that emphasizes strict practices of the monks’ Vinaya and intensive meditation with the objective of liberation from suffering.

His 1208 acre monastery is hidden amidst cool, green forest hills, conducive for those seeking peace and solitude, away from the mass population and city noise.

It has basic essential structure to blend in with natural elements, and can accommodate up to 40 monks and 10 laity during the rains retreat.

The monastery was selected as part of the National Forestation Project in both the Royal King's Mother's Merit Devotion & Forestation in Commemoration of the Royal Coronation 50th Anniversary. The temple ground has been gazetted as an animal sanctuary.

Beside teaching Buddha’s Dhamma to the monastic and laity, both in private and public institutions alike, the Venerable Luang Phor also participates actively in community service, notably the 2011 Thailand flood relief in collaboration with Firefly Mission from Singapore.

    Synopsis

    ORGANISED BY:
KONG MENG SAN PHOR KAR SEE MONASTERY
    PRESENTED BY:
XIAMEN UNIVERSITY SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS
    CONDUCTORS:
LEON SUN (BUTTERFLY LOVERS) WEI GUO (YELLOW RIVER CANTATA)

Come Friday, 27th June 2014, Singapore music lovers will be treated to a double bill of two of the most popular Chinese pieces, the highly acclaimed Butterfly Lovers Concerto and the Yellow River Cantata.

The Butterfly Lovers Concerto will be a rare performance of the Western Violin and Eastern Erhu, and the work is adapted from the traditional Chinese opera. It comprises one continuous movement consisting of Falling in Love, Rejection to the Arranged Marriage and Transformation of the Lovers into Butterflies.

The Yellow River Cantata for Chorus and Orchestra is one of the greatest achievements in Chinese music. The songs are accompanied by a high definition movie with English subtitles, depicting the victorious journey of hatred of War and promotion of World Peace. The lead singer Yalun Zhang has been praised by Luciano Pavarotti as a true Verdi baritone, and he is equally at home in the music of Richard Wagner in the international opera houses.

There will be a special performance on drums by the Abbot of Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, the Venerable Sik Kwang Sheng.

All funds and donations collected will go towards the care for cancer patients at the Singapore Buddhist Free Clinic.
