Sacred Buddha relics in Singapore .
    Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!

Two Buddha tooth relics found in Myanmar are here in Singapore for the first time. Temple officials at the Golden Pagoda Temple in Tampines are thrilled to host two Buddha tooth relics found in Myanmar. They were given an elaborate welcome by devotees at the Golden Pagoda Temple in Tampines. One of the relics will make the temple its permanent home while the other will be returned to Myanmar.

Temple officials are thrilled to host these relics, says temple head Venerable Shi Fazhoa. 'This marks a great turning point in Singapore's Buddhist history, as the presence of Buddha's tooth relics will definitely mean a great deal for the country in the Buddhist world.' According to Buddhist scriptures, Sakyamuni Buddha left 40 tooth relics to be worshipped by future generations.

The tooth to be kept here was discovered in a collapsed pagoda in Myanmar in 1985, says Venerable Shi.

Together with more than 300 other Buddhist artworks, statues and artefacts from 14 Asian countries, they will be displayed at an exhibition in Suntec City from August 02 to August 04.

Admission is free. All are welcome

After that he was Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, USA. Biography of Speaker

Venerable Visuddhacara is a Theravadan Buddhist monk, was born in 1953 in Penang, Malaysia. He was a journalist before becoming a novice monk in 1983 under the guidance of Venerable Sujiva in Kota Tinggi. He was ordained by Sayadaw U Pandita at Mahasi Meditation Centre, Rangoon, in 1987.

He returned to Penang in 1991 where he continued his study and practice of Dhamma and meditation besides doing some teaching. The Venerable is the author of several books: Curbing Anger Spreading Love; Drinking Tea Living Life; Loving And Dying; and "Hello With Love And Other Meditations."
Jul 24Full Moon in the Chinese Sixth Lunar MonthAsalha Puja or Dhamma Day.

This commemorates the Buddha's first discourse, the Dhamma-Cakka-Pavattana Sutta (the Discourse on the Turning of the Wheel of Truth) in Sarnath (Isipatana, Benares) - the Deer Park , which he gave to the group of five monks with whom he had practised in the forest for many years. Upon hearing this discourse, one of the monks -- Ven. Kondañña -- gained his first glimpse of Nibbana, thus giving birth to the Noble Sangha. The annual rains retreat (vassa) commences the following day.

Note: At the end of this first sermon, the Venerable Kondañña became a Sotapanna (a person at the first stage of enlightenment) and then, according to the Commentaries, for example, the Commentary on Vinaya, the other four disciples became Sotapannas, one on each of the four following days. On the first day after the full-moon day in July, the monk Vappa became a Sotapanna; on the second day, Bhaddiya; on the third day, Mahanama; and on the fourth day, Assaji. After they became Sotapannas, they all asked Buddha for ordination. Buddha ordained each of them by calling to them, “Come monks.” On the fifth day after the full-moon day, the Buddha assembled them and preached to them this discourse Anatta-lakkhana Sutta. -The Discourse on the Not-self Characteristic (no-soul or anatta)

New Discoveries On The Threshold Of Enlightenment
    Enchanting Buddhist Treasures Exhibition

Golden Pagoda Buddhist Temple warmly welcomes you to an extensive Buddhist exhibition at Suntec City as part of its 10 th Anniversary Celebrations. More than just a religious event, the exhibition offers you a glimpse into Buddhist history and its culture that has spread across Asia beginning from where it was founded by Buddha Sakyamuni more than 2,600 years ago, in the region bordering between modern day Nepal and India. Experience and discover a colourful, captivating and perhaps even uplifting journey that may just lead you to the threshold of Enlightenment.

    Buddha's Relics
    featuring Buddha's Tooth

    from Myanmar

Before the first century, relics were key instruments in the spread of Buddhism in helping to establish new centres of religious significance.

Since the initial list of sacred sites marked by Buddha was limited, the outward dissemination of his relics made it possible for new centres to be established.

According to Buddhist scriptures, Buddha said for one to witness His relics was as good as seeing Buddha himself.

Thus, we are very fortunate to be able to showcase, amongst Buddha's many relics,Buddha's tooth relics at the exhibition. This implies this venue at Suntec city is now a holy centre of religious significance.

    Buddha's Seven Coloured Relics

These pearls-like translucent multi-coloured relics are the corporeal remains of Buddha after his cremation. Each colour represents different parts of his body

    Buddhist Treasures Exhibition

The very beginnings of Buddhist statuary in India are virtually unknown to us. During Buddha's time, His imageries were mainly iconic representations such as bas-reliefs of Buddha's footprint, a lotus and His mudras (symbolic hand gestures).
Earliest records of Buddha statuary only appeared in India a few centuries after the Buddha's death. It marked a new beginning in Buddhist art.
As Buddhism spread across Asia, the religion both influenced and, in turn, was influenced by the religious, cultural, and artistic life of the regions it touched. It is little wonder that both art and Buddhism should be enmeshed to form a culture to call its own.
It is with great honour that this unique influential culture be presented to you in an enchanting Buddhist exhibition.

This fund-raising activity is part of the Mid Autumn Festival being held by the Singapore River near the Cavenagh Bridge from the 14 to 21 September 2002.

The lilies symbolise perseverance, enduring strength, unique beauty and wisdom - characteristics with which Viriya takes delight in associating.

Said Viriya President, the Venerable Sek Meow Ee, of the event: "We were eager to participate in this Mid Autumn event as it will give us a chance to collaborate with the public in this effort for the community. Given the uniqueness and symbolism of these flowers, we hope the floating of the lilies down our historic lifeline will bring good favour not just to the community, but also to Singapore."

Viriya hopes that each flower will each be exchanged for a donation of $10 or more, with the aim of raising $60,000 for the community initiatives it supports. Viriya will also be selling moon cakes to complement with the festive mood.
