A Strategic Study Of Early Buddhism and Buddhism in East Asia

Preamble
By Piyasilo Tan (20-23 December 2001)

This lecture series is not about a history of Buddhism, though we will be looking at some important historical aspects of the rise of Buddhism and its development in East Asia (China, Korea, and Japan). This is a strategic study of Buddhism as a living religion, especially of its missiology. That is, to say, what we can learn from a study of the early Buddhism (the Buddha's missiology) and of the events, experiences, and efforts of various past great Buddhist masters.

Having examined the reasons for the rise and growth of Buddhism in the areas concerned, we have the advantage of approaching Buddhism today with clearer vision and more effective mission. Having examined the problems Buddhism faced and the reasons for its decline in these same areas, we can learn better what not to do with regards to ourselves as Buddhists and Buddhist workers.
